A pneumatic cylinder is sized on the force available, which depends on the bore and on the line pressure, on the stroke, and on the mounting arrangement. At 6 bar the force stays modest compared with hydraulics: allow a margin, because friction and exhaust back pressure each take their share.

The standards fix the envelope and the mountings, which makes cylinders interchangeable between manufacturers. ISO 15552 covers profile and tie-rod cylinders from 32 to 320 mm bore, superseding the former ISO 6431. ISO 6432 covers round-body mini cylinders from 8 to 25 mm. ISO 21287 defines compact cylinders. A cylinder built to the standard can therefore be replaced without reworking the frame.

  • Speed is not set on the supply flow but on the exhaust, using one-way flow regulators fitted at the ports.
  • A cylinder that has to take a side load needs a guide unit: the rod is not made for it.
  • To sense the positions, specify a magnetic piston and sensors that mount in the groove of the barrel.

Note down the bore, the stroke, the rod thread and the type of mounting, or bring in the cylinder you have removed: we identify the standard equivalent and the accessories that go with it.
